How to Write a Good Essay

Often when a student hears that the teacher is assigning an essay, they will groan or complain to their friends. Most students don’t like writing essays and wish they didn’t have to do it. This is perfectly normal. If you’re feeling this way and you’d rather be out with your friends or at home playing a video game, it’s easy to see how so many students can procrastinate or fall behind in their studies. But you don’t have to suffer through this; there are a few things you can do to make writing an essay easier for yourself and write it faster so that you have time for that game or hang out after all.

Essay Writing Tips

The first thing you should do is figure out all the guidelines from your teacher such as:

  • How long does it need to be?
  • Is your subject chosen for you or can you decide?
  • When is it due?
  • Do you need a proposal written first, or just the essay?
  • Are you allowed to use your textbook for a source?

After you can answer all of those questions and take a few notes about each one, you are ready. Now all you need to do is put together the pieces. If you aren’t assigned a topic, begin brainstorming one that you’d like to write about. Once you know the minimum and maximum word counts for your essay, make a little outline of approximately how many words each section of your essay can be to fall into the acceptable word count range.

Another way to help speed things up is to plan out what you’re going to say in each section. For example, if you’re writing an argumentative essay or research essay, you can figure out which arguments you’re going to use and then order them however you want. Once that’s done, put them into your outline and you can fill it out further from there.

Writing an essay doesn’t have to be hard, and outlining isn’t either. If you do want to save yourself time and work, making some sort of an outline will help immensely and will get your brain thinking and working properly. It also allows you to find any errors in your idea or logic behind your arguments before you begin to write, so that you don’t have to do much editing later on except for spell checks.
